Bodrum guide - Side trips to Bodrum from Marmaris

Tourist information and guide to Bodrum, Turkey...

Bodrum is currently one of the most popular tourist resorts in Turkey, and is undoubtedly the place to go if you need a nightly dose of bars, pubs, foam parties and elaborate nightclubs, because when dusk falls, the resort is ignited in a swarm of neon lights and lasers. The modern complexes provided here have been build within the ancient remains of this destination, giving this city an ageless vibe and a unique atmosphere for a resort which is the alleged heart of nightlife for a country.

Bodrum has much the same to offer as its neighbouring resorts such as Marmaris. Bodrum is very famous for its great nightlife. During high summer there's no doubt that it's about the sun, sea, sand and the partying, and for a long time it claimed to have the loudest disco in the Mediterranean, in the shape of Halikarnas. These days, Halikarnas would have to argue for the title of the loudest disco in Bodrum, let alone the Mediterranean.

Things to Do & See in Bodrum

However, Bodrum has managed to retain a lot of its traditional charm, particularly out of the high season when there are a few less people around. The name of the aforementioned disco alone will give most people a clue as to Bodrum's ultimate claim to fame: it was the home of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, which, back in Roman times, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (and a bit of it can be seen at the British Museum).

Sadly, little remains of the Mausoleum, but for those who want to get away from the beach for a little while, the Castle of St Peter is visible from just about everywhere in the town, standing watch, as it does on a cliff face at the end of one of the bays. The castle is not enormous, but it is undoubtedly worth a visit.

If you head along the beach front a little bit you'll see another reason why Bodrum is becoming a familiar name for tourists. Work has just been completed on a dazzling new marina, and, just a short days sailing from so many Greek and Turkish islands, it's a stopping point of choice for some of the richest people in the world. It's no wonder that Bodrum is gaining a reputation as the Monte Carlo of the Aegean.

By day, you may relax on the nearby Gumbet beach in Gumbet which is spacious, fine sandy and only a 15 minute bus ride from Bodrum. Take up a new watersport from the multitude of sports facilities available here, and kids can have plenty of fun on banana boats, pedalos and at water parks.

By night, head to the mile-long Cumhuriyet Street, also known as ‘Bar Street’ for as much all-night partying as you can take.

If you're looking for a holiday that involves lots of loud late nights then high summer is the ideal time to visit Bodrum. For everyone else, the start and end of the season offer similarly good weather, but with cheaper flights and a bit more peace and quiet, but whatever time of year you go, you're guaranteed great weather, great beaches, and a little bit of top class culture mixed in there too.
